GUIDE TO UNDERSTAND THE WEAVING METHOD OF RUGS: HAND KNOTTED

The Rug Shop's Guide to Understand the Hand Knotting Technique

Hand-Knotted Weaving Technique

Hand-knotted weaving is by far one of the slowest and most expensive rug manufacturing processes in the world. You can find its origin back to centuries and this is the primary reason why you find classic traditional designs imprinted over these rugs majorly. The manufacturing process of these rugs is painstakingly longer as this may take from months to years to finalize one piece of art. The entire process is manually performed by skilled labours and this is the reason why these rugs can sell from hundreds to thousands of pounds.

There are specially designed looms that are used to bring alive these masterpieces. The carpet is hand-knotted on these looms. The size of the rug and the complexity of the design will determine the worth of the carpet. The complex the design pattern would be, the higher the number of knots and thus the carpet will require an intense workforce. This has a direct connection with the cost of the rug upfront. To summarize _ the number of knots required and the size of the loom along with the intense labour will justify the price value of the carpet.

First, the threads are tied vertically (warp) on the loop which is intertwined using horizontal strings (weft) and this forms the foundation layer of the beautiful rug. The weaver now ties the knots to the warp threads by cutting the thread and tying it by hand. The output is the amazing pile of the rug.

The hand-knotting technique is tedious and extremely time-consuming. Ideally, a standard carpet should have 1000 knots per square inch. On average, skilled and experienced labour should be able to do 5-7 knots per minute.

Talking about the knots, there are two main types of hand-knotting techniques used across the globe _ one being the Persian knot while the other is the Turkish knot. Both are very popular and trendy in the industry and are known for their distinct features and characteristics. It's the design that brings a key difference between the two. The Turkish knot is symmetrical while the Persian knot is asymmetrical and leaves the gap in between. When you think of intricate patterns, even the Persian knots safely qualify for it, so just imagine, how far the Turkish knot will go in defining the intricate designing of a rug.

Since the manufacturing process is extremely time-consuming, the weavers have enough time to precisely work on the pile and thus making it highly resilient. Also, these hand-tufted rugs can have a life cycle of up to 20 years courtesy of the precision and extra-ordinary craftsmanship it receives during the weaving process. These rugs are easy to clean and can be repaired without wearing out. These rugs are ideal for high traffic areas.

Well, we hope that you are now familiar with the hand-knotted weaving technique. If you have any queries, we would love to hear from you in the comment section below.
